Addressing the event at the embassy premises at Kensington Garden on Tuesday evening, Nepal’s ambassador to the UK, Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise, said successful completion of the NTY 2011 had encouraged the government of Nepal to declare 2012 as the Visit Lumbini Year. “Lumbini—the birth place of Lord Buddha is not only a holy place for all the Buddhists but for all peace loving people around the world,” he said.

Ambassador Dr Chalise said Nepal offers adventure/pleasure and cultural tourism for people of all ages. He said Nepal’s topography is particularly suitable for North American and European tourists interested in mountaineering and trekking.

Making an audio-visual presentation entitled “Nepal: Paradise of Tourists,” Ms Sian Pritchard-Jones and Bob Gibbons of the Expedition World—a British travel company—said natural and cultural beauty of Nepal made her a unparalleled tourist destination in the world. Recalling his first trip to Nepal in 1974, Bob Gibbons said even after nearly four decades, many parts of Nepal maintained idyllic rural setting.

Stephanie Grosser, Marketing Advisor of The Great Himalayan Trail (TGHT) said TGHT is one of the longest and highest trekking trails in the world. She said the 1,700- km route connects popular treks in the Annapurna and Everest regions with exciting new trekking destinations in the West and East of Nepal.

On January 15, this year, legendary mountaineer Appa Sherpa, along with Dawa Steven Sherpa and other mountaineers, started the journey from Kathmandu with a view to make people aware of the affects of climate change in the Himalayas. The trek is expected to complete in 120 days.

“The Great Himalaya Trail is divided into ten connecting treks of 2-3 weeks length,” said Stephanie adding, “With numerous trekking options and new tourism attractions, each GHT section forms a distinct trekking and adventure destination within itself.” The details about the trail are available at www.thegreathimalayatrail.org.

Artistes from Tamu Dhee London performed Sherpa dance and Tamang Selo which the audience enjoyed very much. A raffle draw was organised on the occasion followed by Nepali dinner.
