24 Oxen to Contest Bull Fight in Nuwakot

TRISHULI (Nuwakot): Preparations for bull fight held every year in Taruka and Betrawati of the district to mark the Makar Sankranti festival has been completed.

Owners of 16 oxen have registered their names for the contest to be held at Thulopato of Taruka-5, according to Chair of the festival management committee Gyan Bahadur Bakharel.

Though it has not been officially known when the bull fight as a public contest began at Betrawati, local elders believe that the practice is around 200 years old.

It is also believed that the bull fight was organized as an entertainment for the King of Bajhang Jaya Prithivi Bahadur Singh, during his visit to his maternal home in Nuwakot.

Likewise, eight oxen have been registered for the contest in Betrawati, according to Chair of Gosaikunda Youth Club Suraj Labat. It is taking place here since the past six years.

The bull fight draws thousands of spectators from Nuwakot as well as from neighbouring Rasuwa, Kathmandu and Dhading districts.

Meanwhile, the organizers have carried out insurance of the bulls that will take part in the contest, apart from the cash prizes that the winners will take home, the organising committee said. RSS
